How Far is Banff from Calgary?

Banff is approximately 128 kilometres from downtown Calgary and around 140 kilometres from Calgary International Airport — both via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) west, the same road the entire way. Under normal driving conditions, the trip from downtown takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes; from the airport, add 10 to 15 minutes for roughly 1 hour 30 to 40 minutes.

In winter (November through March), snow and ice on the mountain sections west of Cochrane are common — add 20 to 30 minutes. On summer long weekends, traffic at the Banff National Park gates can add another 15 to 20 minutes. A private car service accounts for this in the pickup timing automatically; a self-driven trip means building that buffer in yourself.

The Route — Calgary to Banff

From downtown Calgary, the route is simply the Trans-Canada Highway west, no turns required until the Banff exit. From the airport, take Airport Trail to Deerfoot Trail south, then Stoney Trail west to the Trans-Canada. The drive passes through Calgary's western suburbs, then open foothills, with the Rocky Mountain front range visible well before you reach the park gate — most people start reaching for their phone camera somewhere around Cochrane.
