Walking the townsite
Start here, because it covers more than most visitors expect. Banff Avenue, the shops and restaurants, the Whyte Museum, Central Park and the Bow River footbridge are all within an easy walk of the main hotel cluster. Bow Falls is a pleasant riverside walk from the townsite, and the Fenland and Bow River trails start at the edge of town.
What walking does not cover: the Banff Gondola and Upper Hot Springs on Sulphur Mountain, Lake Minnewanka, Vermilion Lakes at a comfortable pace, and anything beyond the townsite. That is where the rest of this list comes in.
Roam public transit
Banff is served by Roam, the regional public transit system operated for the Bow Valley. It runs local routes inside the townsite and regional routes connecting Banff with Canmore and, seasonally, with Lake Louise. Fares are paid on board or via the operator's app, and buses are hybrid-electric with bike and ski racks in season.

Hotel and ski shuttles
A number of Banff properties run their own shuttles into the townsite, which matters most if you are staying somewhere like Tunnel Mountain or up on Sulphur Mountain rather than on Banff Avenue itself. In winter, the ski areas operate shuttles that collect from a list of Banff hotels and run to Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise Ski Resort.

Getting to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
These are the two destinations where planning ahead genuinely matters. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Access is available through Parks Canada shuttles and commercial operators that meet all current Parks Canada requirements.
